Micro Protoss

Jim Here…

Lets get down to some finer details with some protoss micro. These tips and techniques I will go through explain the theories and strategies to use when playing protoss.

If you feel like these are too advanced or not advanced enough then either way this is great information to re-affirm your abilities or get you on the path to learning some new excellent micro skills.

Ok I am going to break this down by unit, I won’t cover all the units but you will get a great feel to protoss micro.

Stalkers
Stalkers are one of the best units to be heavily micro’d you can use them in all sorts of situations. Once you get blink for your stalkers then they can be extremely difficult to hunt down. The trick to stalker micro is to attack and retreat, then repeat

Colossus

Colossus can be micro’d extremely well due to two reasons. They have long range and they can walk up and down cliffs. Using their ability to walk up and down cliffs means you can attack from safety. Their long range allows you to place them behind your other units and burn through the enemy.

Phoenix
Phoenix are one of the best anti air, if not the best. They are extremely fast and can carry on shooting whilst moving. If you keep the battle on the move whilst in the air they are devastating to air units.

Other units

The other units protoss used need to be micro’d as well, but they need to be used to counter enemy units. They do not rely on gaining the advantage as much as some of the previous units.

Ok so we have covered some of the specific unit micro. Now lets cover general protoss micro. There is a technique known as the protoss ball, which is creating various units and grouping them up into a ball. This is very difficult to defeat due to the counters contained with in the ball and because colossus are protected from every side.

Using the techniques explained above, try out a game against the computer and build just one unit, micro this unit effectively to beat the AI. Being able to beat the AI with just one unit will allow you to increase your micro skills. Then mix in other units and micro them seperately using control groups.

Remember to always be thinking and reacting to your enemy. Reacting to the enemy is the most important skill to have when playing SC2.

I hope you enjoyed this quick article on how to micro units as protoss. If you have any suggestions or would like me to change the article slightly then join in the discussion below.
