Today is going to be an important lesson into how to increase your Actions Per Minute or APM.
Now the important thing to remember is that the reason you want to increase your APM is so that you can perform necessary actions and build a solid economy whilst executing excellent micro.
The reason APM is so important is because it is the amount of actions you perform on average per minute.

The more actions you are performing effectively the faster you are playing the game, of course some of this can be useless clicking
What to Increase?
Lets start off by looking at the actions you would like to be doing per minute, doing this will allow you to see where you can increase your current APM.
- Building SCVs/Drones/Probes
- Building Buildings
- Micro-ing Your Army
- Building More Army
- Scouting The Map
- Harassing The Enemy
- Teching/Researching
- Communicating With Your Team (Will not necessarily add to the actual recorded APM inside a replay)
- Expanding Your Base
Ok having looked at these actions, how many of these do you currently get done with in one minute?
Could you seperate each action out and say you can comfortably perform each action giving each one a time of 6.6 Seconds?
If you can then excellent you have a brilliant base for starting to increase your APM, if you do not then this article will help you in being able to increase your APM and maintain excellent macro.
Top Tips for increasing APM
- Learn all of the hotkeys instinctively.
- Actually use the hotkeys.
- Switch from Micro to Macro constantly.
- Use Multi-Micro which means splitting your army into different counter groups.
- Constantly build workers.
- Increase the DPI on your mouse which will make it quicker across the screen.
- Use a slick comfortable keyboard.
These tips are here to provide you with the starting grounds for an above average APM, the reason this helps so much is highly down to the hotkeys.
If you comfortably use the hotkeys and monitor your APM in replays after the games you play on battle.net then this will give you a natural ability not only to start to win a lot more Starcraft 2 games, but also to take this across to other strategy games allowing you to beat enemies in them as well.
Always be aware and focused on the mini map, it is there for a reason! The main reason keeping an eye on the mini map is so helpful is that you can not possibly cover the whole land around your base, your scout, your army and your enemies base by not using the mini map
Just use it
Use it and it will help you amazingly if you see that red or blue dot appearing on the mini map flick to it and check it out with your scout which could be hotkeyed as well, excellent scouts during heavy macro games include observers, overseers, scans and vikings.
